The Intimate Language of Tactile Jewelry

In the Hudson Valley of New York, Judi Powers creates fine jewellery that speaks to the senses. Her work is defined by touch as much as sight, transforming precious metal into surfaces that feel soft, luminous, and alive. Guided by a deep reverence for nature, material, and responsible making, Powers’ jewellery invites a more intimate relationship between object and wearer, where craftsmanship, sustainability, and emotion converge.

Her sculptural pieces explore themes drawn from flora and fauna, the cosmos, and the natural rhythms of the world around us. Through organic forms, unusual gemstones, and her signature Cashmere Finish®, Powers creates jewellery that balances tactile beauty with thoughtful intention. At the heart of Powers’ practice is her trademarked Cashmere Finish®, a surface treatment that transforms metal into something unexpectedly soft and radiant. Developed through years of dedicated bench work, the finish is achieved through meticulous carving, filing, buffing, and refining until the metal gathers and disperses light with a gentle glow.

Rather than the high polish traditionally associated with fine jewellery, her matte gold surfaces possess a quiet warmth, appearing almost fibre-like in their softness. The effect is deeply sensory. Pieces seem to invite touch, encouraging the wearer to feel the warmth of gold and the subtle texture of the surface.

This tactile quality reflects Powers’ desire to create jewellery that reconnects people with physical experience in an increasingly digital world. Her work offers what she describes as an “intimate luxury” — objects designed not only to be seen, but to be held and felt.

Powers’ designs are rooted in close observation of the natural world. She finds inspiration in the graceful undulation of a ripple across water, the curve of a leaf reaching toward sunlight, the branching patterns of dendritic agate, and the delicate colours of early spring blooms. These references are translated into sculptural forms that feel organic and fluid, with soft contours and natural movement. Her jewellery carries a sense of quiet growth and transformation, echoing the living forms that inspire it.

Gemstones play a central role in this expression. Having immersed herself in gemology during her studies, Powers approaches stones as sources of colour, texture, and narrative. She is particularly drawn to unusual gems, selecting each for its individuality and presence, allowing the material itself to guide the design. Her signature green gold further distinguishes her work, offering a subtle warmth that enhances the natural palette of her pieces. At F.I.T., she studied under the late Maurice Galli, former head designer at Harry Winston, where she refined her sculptural design language and deepened her understanding of fine jewellery traditions. She later earned an AAS degree in Jewelry Design, graduating summa cum laude, and holds a BA in Art History from NYU, with further postgraduate study at Hunter College.

A lifelong student, Powers continues to develop her technical skills through advanced bench training, maintaining an ongoing dialogue between tradition, innovation, and personal expression.

Ethical responsibility is central to Powers’ practice. She works with Fairmined™, recycled, and traceably sourced precious metals and gemstones, ensuring that the beauty of each piece extends beyond its surface.

For Powers, jewellery carries a story not only for the wearer but also for the earth and communities connected to its creation. Her commitment to responsible sourcing reflects a belief that luxury should be grounded in respect for both people and planet.

Each piece, whether one of a kind or part of a collection, embodies this philosophy, combining material integrity with thoughtful craftsmanship.

What distinguishes Judi Powers’ work is its emotional depth. Her jewellery is not conceived as ornament alone but as a vessel for personal meaning. Each piece is designed to mark moments, celebrate connection, and carry the pleasure of its making from the artist’s hands to the wearer.

Her practice is rooted in quiet concentration, from carving wax and shaping metal to selecting gemstones that speak to her. This process infuses her work with a sense of intention and care, creating objects that feel deeply considered and enduring.
